I love connecting with people who love to read or write (or both!), and I appreciate the many avid readers and writers I’ve “met” online through the years. I’ve done this by posting on a now long-defunct (but still fun for me to revisit) blog, then on social media, and then on Medium. But when I recently registered for a master class on how to increase my readership on Medium, I admit I was most concerned with how to make more money with my writing. And while the host of the master class, Vienna-based writer, editor, and marketing maven Sinem Günel, is adept at helping writers build their businesses through her Medium Writing Academy, she also offers advice that applies to all writers when it comes to connecting with an audience.

Readers of my Writing Well column, which exists thanks to The Writing Cooperative editor Justin Cox (who was mentioned by Sinem during her class), know that my online writing primarily explores the wild world of grammar. I believe one thing that’s helped that column attract readers is my excitement at learning something new about the English language and then sharing that discovery with other writers. I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember…
