AI Terminology For the Rest of Us
From computer vision to machine learning and Anthropic to LLaMA, including what GPT in ChatGPT means
When you live with a tech pro, you tend to pick up tech terminology via casual conversations, especially when your resident tech pro loves to talk shop. Since I’m such a word nerd, I appreciate any opportunity to learn not only what new tech terms really mean but how different tech entities work together (or compete like fiends) and how the latest tech might ultimately impact our daily lives.
While AI has been around for while and I first heard terms like machine learning from my husband a few years ago, I’m beginning to understand how the many elements that make up the AI universe fit together. But just as I need to revisit rules of grammar over and over before they stick, I find the more I research and write about AI, the better I remember exactly what all the latest tech terms mean.
Below is an overview of AI terminology in non-technical language for those of us without tech backgrounds. I’ve tried to dig down to the very basics of each term and break down some definitions — really for my own benefit, but hopefully you’ll find this approach helpful as well.
